From the Director
“I know life is supposed to be this great mystery, but I think it’s pretty simple: find someone to go through it with. That’s it. That’s the, whatever, the secret.” - Jordan in Significant Other by Joshua Harmon
Jordan says it best. A discovery that he makes early on in the play, but then spends the rest of the story searching for his significant other. I don’t think Jordan is wrong, but I wonder over the course of the play if he starts to question his own definition of a significant other? Significant Other is a comedy about love. Love for a best friend, a grandparent, and perhaps the search for our partner in life. Jordan’s quest is not without hardship, but playwright Joshua Harmon weaves humor through the story with bad dates, drunken bachelorette parties, and life-altering events like bringing new life into this world, that all crash into each other. Sometimes you just have to get through it, and that’s what this play is ultimately about, pushing through the murk to find the life-changing lessons that help define us. Perhaps those lessons are never done but it doesn’t mean we have to go on this journey alone.
