Each ritualized death, brings Rachel one-step closer to being able to finally say good-bye to her father, grieve, and let go.
Ophelia’s Story
Hangar Theatre Lab
2007
Directed by Illana Stein
Opehlia’s Story was conceptualized using the text from Hamlet and other Shakespeare plays. The story focuses on Ophelia’s struggle for love as she is manipulated by those around her: lover, brother, and father. The use of masks concealed the characters’ identities. Using the convention of a marionette doll, the actress had strings attached to her arms and legs and her movements were controlled by the other actors. As Ophelia reaches her breaking point , the voices around her become more obscured, making it harder to tell who is pulling what string. Fighting to control her own destiny, Ophelia finds freedom by cutting her own strings and jumping to her “muddy death.”
