Convention of Frames
The device of frames was a major element of the set design. This highlighted the presentational feel of this particular adaptation. Emma is confined in a box by her role in society and what is expected of her. As we are introduced to new characters, they pop in and out the open, hanging frames. Once Emma learns how to allow love in, she is able to break out of her own confining box. The last image on stage was Emma and Mr. Knightly leaving through the frame of the French doors. The doors open up to outdoors and to freedom as Emma begins her new life; breaking out of this once confining world.
